This collection of the author's extensive life's work makes available twenty-six essays published in the years 1957-2021 in various journals and periodicals. The structure of the volume reflects the breadth of the author's scope, moving from an interest in economic and social history (e.g. the essay Towards a characterization of the crisis of feudalism in the 16th-17th centuries) to cultural history (the history of European national movements in the 19th century), from archival study to comparative and interdisciplinary analysis of historical change. Among the selected texts we also find several more general essays that seek to make available to a wider readership topics still debated today, such as nationalism or patriotism, or reflect on more general issues such as the historical specificity of Europe, memory and historical consciousness/awareness.
