The author reveals the historical conditions, requirements, and the first attempts to create watemark collection; introduces new names of Russian researchers of watermarks. The author explores activities of a Vologda merchant Ivan Laptev - well known collector of antiquities. The author analyzes Laptev's collections of watermarks and also his collection of antique manuscripts, books, and coins, depicting him as a practical paleographer.
