Marco Vovchok (1833-1907) - Ukrainian and Russian writer, translator, second cousin of the Russian literary critic D. I. Pisarev. She was familiar with Taras Shevchenko, Panteleimon Kulish, Nikolai Kostomarov, Ivan Turgenev, Alexander Herzen, Nikolai Dobrolyubov, Nikolai Leskov and other writers, publicists, scientists. She wrote in Ukrainian, Russian, French. The work of the outstanding Ukrainian writer is devoted to depicting the life of the Ukrainian peasantry in conditions of serfdom. In the novels and stories presented in this collection, the story is conducted on behalf of the heroes or people close to them. It is mainly about the humiliation of human dignity, the mockery that Ukrainians suffered from serfs, as well as various tragedies in peasant families. Poetizing fidelity in love and friendship, mutual understanding in families, Marco Vovchok condemned family despotism, betrayal, selfishness, any manifestations of hostility. The writer's works took pride of place next to the best works of world literature on the peasantry. They played a huge role in the development of fiction, literary language and public opinion in Ukraine.
