The author Mikhail Grulev (1858 - after 1940) is major general of the General Staff, an active participant of the Russo-Japanese war, military orientalist, traveler, writer and interpreter. The book is written soon after the end of military activities of the Russian Army in Manchuria. In his memoirs the author traces one of the tragic periods in the military history of Russia.
