The authors of the collective monograph seek to reconsider the established historiographical stereotypes associated with the influence of the unification of the XVIII - first half of the XIX century. on the social identities of Ukrainians in the Romanov and Habsburg empires. The sections of the work consider the relationship between the general imperial, (proto) national, regional and social levels of self-identification of different historical actors. Special attention is paid to the coverage of Ukrainophilism and imperial ultrapatriotism of Ukrainian elites, as well as the influence of the Enlightenment on the transformation of social identities in the transition period of the late XVIII - early XIX centuries.
