The novel "Ilze" by prominent novelist and dramatist Anslav Eglitis has been published only twice so far, both times by Latvians in exile "Book Friend" (in 1959 and 1960). The events depicted in it take place in the 1940s and 1950s and are based on real events.
"This is one of the first literary works where the conditions of the second Soviet occupation in Latvia are reflected in such a nuanced way. "Ilze" is one of those artistically high-value Latvian novels written in exile, which deal with themes that could not be touched upon in the literature created under Soviet rule. It is both the revelation of the dramatic experiences of the refugees and the subsequent emigration to their homeland, which took people even further from their homeland, but especially the depiction of the conditions and changes that were connected with the tragic events of the Second World War in the homeland and the occupation of Latvia." - Literary scholar Benedikts Kalnacs
