This book is a long-term work of a teacher at the Institute of Arts and Design of Altai State University, Doctor of Art History, Archpriest Georgy (Yuri Aleksandrovich) Kreidun and a graduate of Altai State University, Candidate of Art History Galina Dmitrievna Bulgaeva. This is the first book in which the icons of the Athonite writing are collected, which are in the churches and private collections of Altai. The publication contains material that reflects one of the facets of the spiritual life of the Russian people at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. The monograph reveals historical information about the icon-painting centers of Athos and the Athos icons, which are now in Altai. For the first time, legends related to the veneration of Athos icons are introduced into the scientific circulation, the circumstances of ordering icons on Athos for parish churches and missionary camps in Altai, recorded in documentary sources. The book presents a voluminous catalog of icons painted in Russian monasteries on Athos in the 19th - 20th centuries and preserved to our time, as well as images created in the late 20th - early 21st centuries. Most of the works revealed signatures containing information about the time and place of origin of the icons: these data became the basis for the primary attribution of the monuments. Many information and facts are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. The monograph is the result of many years of work, which is based on archival documents and data obtained during field expeditions in the Altai Territory and the Altai Republic in the period from 2007 to 2009.
