Hristo Belchev (1857-1891) was a Bulgarian politician and poet who served as minister of finance. He was assassinated during an attempt on the life of prime minister Stefan Stambolov. Belchev's wife, poetess Mara Belcheva, was the muse of the great poet Pencho Slaveikov and had a relationship with him. The present book features letters, current affairs analyses and poems by Hristo Belchev. The letters were addressed to his wife, whom he adored. Belchev's manuscript "Thoughts", which clearly shows his affinity to philosophical musing and aphoristic expression, is published in its entirety for the first time. His talent for literary analysis is evidenced by his article on Charles Baudelaire's "The Flowers of Evil".
