This is a book of short stories by Yordan Radichkov (1929-2004), arguably the most important voice in Bulgarian literature in the last third of the 20th century. One evening, the apartment building where Radichkov lives suddenly resounds with the metallic voice of a frog. The frog persistently asks all occupants of the building: "How come?" The question causes confusion among them, and after many attempts to kill the frog, the question remains unanswered. It echoes through all the stories in the book "How Come?", first published in 1974. The stories seem connected by virtue of the fact that some characters hop from one story into another. They manage to plant the question into the reader's mind as it continues to bewilder the villagers depicted by Radichkov. The frog is elevated to the height of a philosophical question.
