The monograph focuses on the institutional, personal, theoretical-methodological and general epistemological development of ethnology (ethnography, ethnography and folklore studies, sociocultural anthropology) in the Czech lands in the second half of the 20th century, taking into account the European and world development of these disciplines. This is the first modern description and analysis of the development of ethnology as a distinct scientific field with its own internal dynamics, which developed in Czechoslovakia after 1945 in the very specific cultural, social and political conditions of a totalitarian society and ideology. The development of the field is described as a complex process, where the official currents of science and the sphere of so-called research niches characterized by a considerable degree of creativity and scientific freedom existed side by side. The dynamics of their mutual encounter and influence defined the development of Czech ethnology in the second half of the 20th century, both at the level of academia (universities, the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) and as an applied discipline (museums and open-air museums, folk art production, folklore festivals).
