Persecution of Jews in Latvia by Nazis during World War II is revealed in this thorough study which is considered to be a new wave in Holocaust research: new approaches, precise description of events, extensive use of archival documents and trial records. Riga massacres, concentration camps for German Jews, awkward imitations of pogroms, role of Latvian anti-Semites (especially of the Arajs SD Commando Unit) and local police administrations, conflicts between SD and German Ministry of the East - the work spares no details. The author received Ph.D from New York University. He is a member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. The work was supported by The Historical Institute of Latvia and the United States Holocaust Museum.
