The 1860s became a real boundary between serfdom-based and post-reform Russia, a turning point in the country’s life and art. People of the 1860s identified public freedom with the liberation from classicism and romanticism. Painters discovered new topics, subjects and heroes for their works. Genre art was the boldest and most relevant at that time. The 1860s witnessed a critical change in development of landscape painting. Finally, in autumn of 1870 the Ministry of Internal Affairs approved the statute of the Society of Traveling Art Exhibitions, an association of Moscow and Saint-Petersburg traveling artists.
