This 12-volume edition, which dwells upon life and creative work of Russian painters of all schools and styles, presents a real phenomenon in art studies. Each epoch gives birth to its own great names. Unfortunately, in the XXth century many of them turned out to be unjustly forgotten under some circumstances, including emigration, “behind-the-scene games” of soviet art criticism, etc. The second half of the XXth century was the time, when an artificially created style, called socialist realism, flourished in the art.
