The monograph looks at eleven centuries of history of one of the most remarkable Balkan cities during the Middle Ages - Sofia, the present-day capital of Bulgaria. Situated on a diagonal road through the Balkan Peninsula, Sofia was known at the time as Serdica, Sredets, or Triaditsa. During the early Byzantine period, Serdica was a "glamorous metropolis", the capital of the province of Dacia Mediterranea, a preferred place for Emperor Constantine the Great, who built a magnificent architectural ensemble in it. Between the 11th and the 12th century, Serdica (Triaditsa, Sredets) was one of the most important strategic fortresses in the western part of Byzantium, but it preserved its Bulgarian ethnicity. Present-day Sofia has inherited splendid monuments from its medieval past, and they are the most valuable assets bequeathed by the residents of this ever-living and famous city.
