The chronological limits of this book, which is the first volume of a detailed study of 20th century history of Latvia, mark a comparatively brief but very significant period: 1900-1918, including such events as the Revolution of 1905 and World War I (1914-1918), the latter being followed by far-reaching changes. The collapse of the old empires and the formation of new states out of the ruins of the Russian Empire. Thus, Latvia announced itself a member of the family of European states. The present book is supplemented with appendices – name index, and geographical names index.
