In Latvia two traditions of writing have emerged in the course of history: the Latvian literary or common language and the Latgalian written language, which is a regional characteristic. Under the Soviet domination the use of the Latgalian language was restricted. After Latvia regained its political independence, the interest in Latgale again increased. Periodicals, fiction, cultural and historical researches are published in Latgalian.
