The presented publication is based on long-term research into clothing culture, which was carried out in memory institutions in Slovakia. The topic is reflected in relation to the development of fashion in the world and to selected contemporary ideological trends that were reflected in women's clothing in the 19th century. It focuses mainly on the affinity towards the past, which is significant and legible in the clothing fashion of this century. The book is divided into five chapters. The first briefly discusses the theoretical foundations of the study and interpretation of fashionable clothing. The second characterizes the phenomenon of fashionable novelty, which significantly increased in the 19th century and created a fashion dictate - dressing fashionably was synonymous with civility. A positive relationship to the past was evident in fashion innovations from the late 18th to the early 20th century, which will be presented in the third chapter, which focuses on historicisms in clothing in the context of aesthetic and artistic trends. The fourth chapter will draw attention to the fact that the protagonists of the so-called clothing and craft reform also sought to revive the past. They criticized mainstream women's fashion, which deformed the female body with corsets and crinolines. The concepts of national clothing also shared in the spread of historicisms. The relationship to the nation and homeland was also communicated through clothing, which in this century had not only an emotional but also a political function. The fifth chapter will point this out. The text is supplemented with numerous images - reproductions of period portraits, photographs, fashion graphics and illustrations, as well as clothing from the 19th century, used and preserved in Slovakia.
