The work of the famous Soviet linguist and teacher P.Y. Chernykh (1896-1970) is devoted to the description of historical grammar of the Russian language, its transformation to the modern Russian language, its grammar and vocabulary, phonetic system and writing. The book consists of four parts. The first part describes the subject and object of historical grammar, examines the main sources of historical study of the Russian language, compares the Russian literary language with dialects, as well as studies the features that distinguish the Russian language from other Slavic languages. The second part of the book is devoted to the study of sound in the Russian language in connection with the development of writing. The third part examines the development of the grammatical structure of the Russian language, describes the historical morphology and syntax. Finally, the fourth part of the book is devoted to the study of ancient Russian vocabulary, in particular, to the development of lexical resources of the ancient Russian language.
