The book traces the historical roots of the modern borders of Ukraine. It is shown that the current borders are a pale shadow of the historical ones, and the key contours of the Ukrainian territory were formed during the 16th - the 18th centuries. The beliefs of the Ukrainian elites regarding the ideal borders of Ukraine, the physical mastery of the territories in the east and south by Ukrainians, the decisive contribution of the Cossacks to the irreversible rooting of the Ukrainian trace there are examined. Separately, the original ideas of the neighbors (Poland, Muscovia, the Crimean Khanate, Turkey) about the natural borders of Ukraine are expressed.
