The aim of the represented study is to characterize and evaluate the level and results of research into Estonian journalism history and to suggest some new ideas for approaching the subject. The historical stages of the development of Estonian journalism are defined and specified by the author. The included articles give the most relevant characteristics of the press (technologies, market conditions, politicization etc). Censorship and other means of restriction of the freedoms of speech and the press are taken into account.
