A couple of years after her successful series of reports, film and book Heroes of Capitalist Labour, reporter Sasha Uhlova went into the field again. This time, instead of mapping the difficult and low-paid jobs at home in the Czech Republic, she went abroad to explore the work usually done by Eastern Europeans. Which way does the wage iron curtain actually stretch, when low-paid work awaits people from the East even in the mythical West?
During the reporting period, Sasha worked on a German farm, mostly with Polish temps, looked for work in England, worked as a maid in Ireland and tried the demanding job of elderly caregiver in the south of France in Marseille. She has described all her experiences in reports that have already appeared on Alarm and are now being published in book form. The book, which is Alarm's third venture after Piku and Factory of Lies, will offer a more detailed and comprehensive picture of the East-West work experience.
