The book is about Grigor Nachovich (1845-1920), a Bulgarian statesman, one of the builders of modern Bulgaria after its liberation from Ottoman Turkish rule in 1878. Quite unfairly, he was nicknamed Beelzebub (meaning Satan) by his political opponents. A freedom-fighter before the Liberation and a participant in the 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish War, a member of the Constituent National Assembly which adopted the first Bulgarian constitution, first minister of finance in the Principality of Bulgaria and holder of various other ministerial posts in many successive governments, a diplomatic envoy and adviser, mayor of the capital Sofia - Nachovich played so many roles. As the saying went, "You have Nachovich, you have a government".
