In January 1973, the Gomel branch of BPI was opened on the basis of the general technical department. In the same year, the first graduation of students of the evening branch took place. In 1981, the school was transformed into the Gomel Polytechnic Institute (GUI), and in 1995 the institute was named after Pavel Osipovich Sukhoi, an outstanding aircraft designer. Since July 1, 1998 the Gomel Polytechnic Institute named after P.O. Sukhoi was transformed into the P. O. Sukhoi Gomel State Technical University.
