The Belarusian land is rich in traditions, which are carefully preserved and passed on from generation to generation. Belarusian ethnographers-researchers Yanka Kruk and Oksana Kotovich studied and systematized the cultural experience of the East Slavic peoples and created a fundamental set of regulations, instructions, prohibitions, and rituals.
The goal of every nation is to preserve its identity and uniqueness, create and maintain well-being, prolong and strengthen its lineage. Large chapters of the book “The ABC of Ritual Activities” and “The Life Circle of a Person: From Birth to the Tomb Cross” describe and, importantly, logically explain the meaning and symbolism of rituals covering the entire life cycle of human existence - from birth to death. Much attention is paid to the cycle of rites of birth and the first year of a child’s life, wedding and funeral rites.
Since ancient times, every day of a Belarusian has been full of small and big events, work and well-deserved holiday rest. The chapter “Man in the cycle of holidays of the traditional calendar” describes all the holidays and memorable days of the Orthodox and folk calendars, and discusses the customs, signs, prescriptions and prohibitions associated with them.
The final chapter “Man and the world around us: home, household, health and family well-being” reveals the age-old secrets of the construction of the Microcosm of Belarusians, starting with the choice of a place to build a house, creating and maintaining the symbolism of ritual places in the yard and house and ending with the ritual principles of housekeeping, the basics of protecting and preserving the spiritual and energetic principles of man.
