The book presents the results of glaciological investigations, performed for the last 10-15 years by the Institute of Geography, the Russian Academy of Sciences. They embrace studies of interaction between snow cover and the atmosphere circulation, factors of existence and degradation of perennially frozen rocks, variations of usual glaciers and drastic surges of pulsing glaciers, caused by the climate of the XXth century, and the processes of formation of the glacier-derived runoff. With respect to a territory, this book covers the whole area of the former Soviet Union, as well as the Western part of the European Arctic and some regions of the Central Asia.
