The author applies to numerous rare archival materials and other sources in order to examine economic, social, political and cultural development of the German Autonomy of the Volga Region at various historic stages: in years of the NEP and the first two five-year plans as well as on the eve and during the first months of the Great Patriotic War. Much focus is on the problem of liquidation of the ASSR of the Volga Germans and deportation of the German population from the banks of the Volga to Siberia and Kazakhstan.
