The 118th Police Battalion was formed in 1942 in Kyiv, mainly from Ukrainian Red Army soldiers who agreed to collaborate with the occupiers. They underwent special training in various schools in Germany, donned German uniforms and took the military oath of allegiance to Hitler. Initially, its members wore Lithuanian uniforms. In Kyiv, the battalion "became famous" for the particular cruelty with which it exterminated people in Babi Yar. This served as the best characteristic for sending punitive forces to Belarus in December 1942. The publication presents evidence of the mass extermination of civilians by punitive forces in the occupied territories of the BSSR during the Great Patriotic War, obtained during the investigation by the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Belarus of the criminal case on the genocide of the Belarusian people. One of the goals of the investigation by the Prosecutor General's Office is not only to bring to justice those guilty of genocide, but also to show their true face through the evidence obtained. One of the results of this work was the criminal cases against the commander of the 118th battalion of the security police K.A. Smovsky and his subordinate V.K. Katryuk. The investigation conducted by the Prosecutor General's Office established all the circumstances of the mass reprisals against the civilian population of Belarus that they committed.
