This paper provides information on the historical stages of the development of the prison system in the Urals, indicating the key moments when this system was transformed from a prison system into a corrective labor system. The authors tried to present the reader with a historical overview of the organization of prison-type institutions from the moment of the development of the Urals to the formation of a system of bushes of correctional labor institutions on its territory. At the same time, the authors paid special attention to the Verkhneuralsk prison. The work traces the history of the institution's development from the moment of the development of the region to the 1970s. The material collected by the authors since 1997 reflects the development of the penitentiary system from the political aspirations of state leaders to the implementation of these ideas on specific examples of prison-type institutions. The presented material is unique in its content, since it reflects the evolution of the most closed institution of the Soviet era.
