The book traces the evolution of the ethnic and political development of the population of the present territory of Ukraine from Kievan Rus (9th - 13th centuries) to its acquisition of state sovereignty. In his research, the author tried to present historical phenomena and events as adequately as possible, without resorting to the method of retrospection, which is widespread in Ukrainian historiography, when the past is presented not in identical names and concepts, but in modern ones, which are not known in written sources. This applies equally to the historical ethnonymy of the population, which has not been unchanged over the centuries. It acquired its present ethnic name thanks to the educational activities of Russian intellectuals of the 19th century. - M. Maksimovich, N. Kostomarov, P. Kulish, P. Chubinsky, M. Dragomanov and others, having turned from Rus and Malorussians into Ukrainians.
