The Second World War scattered Estonians on both sides of the front line. In 1941, Estonians fought against Estonians: extermination battalions and militias fought on the side of the red government, and the forest brothers, later called self-defense, fought against them. Unlike the Summer War of 1941, when forest brothers and extermination battalions clashed with each other, in the autumn of 1944 there were battles between Estonians who had already fought in the German and Red Army. The largest and most important battles took place in September 1944. Active military activity ended with the conquest of Estonia by the Red Army, and further battles on Estonian soil already took place between forest brothers and destruction battalions.
