The book contains biographies of the foreigners, who came to Russia in the XVIth – XVIIth Centuries. Representatives of various ethnic, religious, professional and social groups were selected from the diverse flow of immigrants. All of them became orthodox in Russia. The material suggested, provides an opportunity to examine the processes of assimilation, which show how the foreigners, who adopted Orthodoxy, joined the Russian society. Studying life of foreigners in Russia through the prism of faith choice allows us to understand the significance of religion in the life of Russian society of that time. It also helps to comprehend self-determination both of the Russians and the foreigners, to put a question of Russian nationality system development. Besides, the documents analyzed, give the grounds to estimate the role of the newly-adopted foreigners in the Russian and western contacts of the pre Peter’s times.
