A historical novel set in the Middle Ages. Omurtag is hated by the Bulgarians, and events in Belgrade bring him closer to Dragomir, the narrator of the story. The lives of the two men unfold in similar ways. Each of them falls in love, but for one of them love brings only sorrow, while for the other it is a life-changing experience. The struggle between Bulgarians and Byzantines for supremacy in the Balkans intensifies. Dragomir is sent on a mission to Thessaloniki. He ends up in a monastery, where he is forced to pledge allegiance to Christ, and later becomes involved in a mission of a group of monks and a detachment of soldiers who are sent by the Byzantine Emperor to subjugate the Slavic tribe of the Strumyani. The foresight of Khan Krum thwarts the plans of the Byzantines. They suffer a severe defeat at the hands of the Bulgarians, which is the beginning of a series of bloody wars between the two countries.
