Translated by Nino Sharvashidze. Luigi Villari (1876–1959) was an Italian historian, diplomat, journalist, and traveler. In 1905, he traveled to the Caucasus, which was then engulfed in revolution and ethnic strife. Villari arrived in the Republic of Guria, stayed for a long time in Kutaisi and Tiflis, and also visited Baku, Yerevan, and Nakhichevan. Everywhere he met both high-ranking officials and ordinary people, talked to military personnel, police officers, clergy, and businessmen, and observed the people's lives and customs.
