This book is a study of the military operations in February 1944 in northeastern Estonia – on the Narva Front, based on previously unused archival sources from both sides, where the Red Army offensive was halted for several months. That year, the largest and bloodiest battles ever fought here took place on Estonian soil. In the strategic plans of both enemy sides, the Soviet Union and Germany, the possession of Estonian territory was of great importance, and Hitler indirectly linked it to the final outcome of the war. Hundreds of thousands of men took part in the fighting on and behind the front line, with thousands of artillery pieces and hundreds of armored vehicles and aircraft. Tens of thousands died, hundreds of thousands were injured. Many settlements were reduced to ruins in the fire of war, and the city of Narva was almost completely destroyed. The work contains numerous appendices and 64 pages of battle diagrams.
