Based on archival documents the book introduces the particulars of works devoted to the Mordvins and written by V.Tatishchev, N.Karamzin, S.Solofiev, and V.Kluchevsky. Certain chapters are devoted to clergymen who were involved in description of churches, the founders of church regional studies.
