This monograph is the first edition that reflects the history of the Russian Far East during 1920–1930, when the region was going through a deep modernization of all aspects of life based on Soviet ideology that was principally different. This book leverage a large spectrum of sources and gives a holistic view of the political, socio-economic and cultural development of the Far East in the age of radical transformation of 19020s and 1930s. A lot of attention is focused on how the most important, revolutionary events in the history of the region were rooted in the global key processes that took place in the country as a whole. Historiography analysis (national and international) showed how well the history of the Far East in 1920–1930 has been studied. The book discussed the role of the new economic policy as the leading factor behind transformational processes that established a new model of socio-economic development of the society. Modernization changes in the political system, social structure, economy and culture, in the material well-being of the region’s population and in the life of smaller populations are studied. The book highlights the specifics of the demographic processes that took place in the Far East in the 1920s–1930s, shows the structure of the legal entities, realization of the repression policy and the scale of repressions in the years of ‘big terror’, the role and place of the region in the penitentiary system of the country. The monograph also characterizes changes in the international relations, follows the process of intensifying contradictions between USSR and the countries of Asia Pacific region, accents attention on the problems of creation of military reserves and strengthening the defense capabilities of the region.
