The present book was written by E.P.Karnovich (1823-1885), an outstanding Russian historian and writer, the author of numerous fiction, historical and publicistic works. The book is dedicated to the genealogy questions of the Russian nobility and peculiarities of receiving the titles. The first part includes examination of the origin of the Russian family names and clan sobriquets. The second part traces the history of creation and development of titles in Russia, including the tzar, prince’s, count’s, baron’s and other ones. The book also comprises an interesting sketch about the significance of foreigners in the history of the Russian state.
