The book was first published in 1884. It was compiled from the author’s own notes made in the Volga River region. The book contains not only fairytales, but also the whole variety of popular prose: legends, tales and mythological stories. Some of the fairytales recorded by D.Sadovnikov are unique as none of the folklorists before or after Sadovnikov had ever come across them.
