The monograph is devoted to the study of all aspects of Hutsul life. Hutsul customary, legal and ethical norms, beliefs, superstitions, demonology, customs, and rites represent complex and extremely valuable material for science. It traces the imprints of the spiritual life of different epochs from the primitive communal system, a combination of ancient pagan and later Christian elements, fantastic irrational ideas with practical experience gained and tested over the centuries. Hutsul folklore is also rich in relic elements, especially ritual songs, fairy tales, legends, and conspiracies related to beliefs and prejudices. In the folk poetry of the Hutsuls such song genres as Kolomyia, the song-chronicle, received special development. The melody of folk singing, instrumental music, traditional dances, original folk art, etc. are marked by unique originality.
