A glance at old maps gives some idea of just how densely Estonia was once covered with manorial estates. Most of the photographs in this album are from the time when the future of the manorial estates appeared to be as bright as a cloudless sky. There are 250 of them here - only every fourth estate is represented. As abundant and diverse as the overall picture of manor houses appears in this album, the reality was in fact many times more abundant. In fact, Baltic German culture as a whole encompassed multiple aspects and was actually far more multi-layered and diverse than one could conclude on the basis of manor houses and their architectural appearance.
