The Vikings traveled and traded from the 8th to the 11th centuries throughout Europe, conquering England and parts of France, colonizing the uninhabited islands of the North Atlantic, and sailing to America. The Viking Age lasted in Estonia from approximately 800-1025. Marika Mägi's book not only tells about brave warriors and rich merchants, but also tries, using artistic techniques, to show the life of that time from the point of view of different people, depicting the living conditions of the Viking Age - buildings, lifestyle, food and clothing. At least the Estonian islands and coastal areas were part of the normal Nordic people during the Viking Age. Weapons, jewelry, clothing, probably also customs, traditions and social organization were similar, although all opinions and assumptions about Viking Age Scandinavia cannot be automatically transferred to Estonia. The new edition reflects the latest archaeological research, adding a chapter on the Salme shipwrecks, as well as chapters on the fortresses and harbors of Saaremaa, Viking women and the emergence of Christianity.
