For the first time in the context of text stylistics, one of the most popular genres of the modern mass media is studied. The author made an attempt to draw a stylistic portrait of the essay. He turned to its origins in the old and classical Russian literature. The universal philological problem of “the reader and the author’s implication” is interpreted with the help of essays of different ages, cultures and genres. The analysis of the genre’s stylistic peculiarities with the help of decoding methods enables to discover linguistic outlines of the composition and speech unity in the genre of essay.
