The author describes the events happened in the period of decline of the Roman Empire. He emphasizes the spiritual aspects of that epoch and centers the figure of the chronicler Albin Paulinis who gathered the materials about his teacher – Christian monk and thinker Pelagey Britanets. The sermons of that monk were heriticated. Albin Paulinis had a girlfriend – a Greek woman Aphenais – who at the end of the novel became the empress of the Eastern Roman Empire and was converted to Christianity.
