The book accompanies the exhibition "Elisarion. Elisar von Kupffer and Jaanus Samma" at the Kumu Art Museum (22.03.-08.09.2024). The Baltic German Elisar von Kupffer (1872–1942) or Elisarion, born in Estonia, but who lived most of his life in Italy and Switzerland, was a visionary, a colorful personality and a versatile creator. In his paintings, he often staged himself as an auto act, provoked with nudity and consciously blurred the boundaries of gender. The book summarizes Elisar von Kupffer's life and artistic creation, offering an insight into the social cataclysms and religious utopias of the early 20th century, the artist's childhood in Estonia and his homoerotic home world.
