"Donetsk is the same city as any other, if you don't take into account the war in the suburbs, the emptiness in the streets and the fear in people's heads."
As a fourteen-year-old teenager, Mamuka found himself in the vortex of war in Georgia, and many years later he arrived at the front in Donbas, where he aimed a machine gun at Russian soldiers, fought with them in hand-to-hand combat and tracked their positions before firing a mortar. On the other side of the front line, the criminal Yura joined the ranks of pro-Russian militants. And Lisa, who lived in the suburbs of Luhansk, left her home for several weeks to be away from separatist attacks. She had no idea that she would never return there.
Tomas Forro talks about the war in Donbas from the heart of the conflict. He talks to people on both sides of the front, repeatedly risks his life and sneaks into places where no journalist has ever looked. He thoroughly describes the political situation in the east of Ukraine and the Russian tactics of hybrid warfare, in which traditional battles are mixed with the actions of irregular formations, and facts are mixed with propaganda. His analytical reflections are inextricably linked with the stories of people for whom war and its consequences are a painful everyday life. Big politics is intertwined here with small, and the fates of soldiers - with the fates of ordinary families who lost everything they had in this conflict.
