The historical poem "Dnieper Stones" was written in Latin in the early seventeenth century, but remained unknown to Ukrainian researchers until the 1980s. It was first published in Ukrainian translation in 1988 by Volodymyr Lytvynov. There is little documentary evidence about the author of the poem by Ivan (Jan) Dombrowski. In 900 verses he tells the history of the region, teaches how to win the sympathy of the local people, sets a program of action: to rebuild the devastated Kiev, which was once the capital of a giant state. A chronological account of historical events dates back to 430 and is dedicated to the glorification of the past greatness of Ukraine-Russia. The poem is one of the most significant monuments dedicated to the understanding of Ukrainian history, which clearly shows humanistic features. It was written primarily for the patriotic and moral education of the reader to remind him of the glorious but forgotten pages of the history of his homeland. The second purpose of the work is to open Ukraine to Western Europe, as well as to declare its people, identifying them with the well-known Kievan Rus.
