This publication presents the most comprehensive analysis of the distribution of public funds in Slovakia and the implications of this practice for electoral competition. It covers the distribution of subsidies to municipalities from three national programmes between 2003 and 2018, a period spanning five different governments. The book shows that resource sharing in Slovakia serves as a tool for political parties to reward their own members and punish their rivals. Moreover, specific subsidy allocation strategies have been shown to distort local elections by giving some mayors unjustified advantages on their path to re-election. The book thus proves that there are few more loyal allies in the world than politics and money.
