The daughter of a Russian merchant of modest means Elizaveta D'iakonova was born in 1874 in Nerekhta, the Kostroma Province, and perished under strange circumstances in the mountains of snowy Tirolean Alps of Austria when she was 27. Beginning from early years she began to write her diary, which was published for the first time in 1905 and has been for already 100 years compared with the diary of Maria Bashkirtseva. The diary is favorably distinguished from the diary of Bashkirtseva by originality of the character, literary gift and extreme sincerity in self-examination of the author.
