The edition is a continuation of “Diaries 1916-1918” (Moscow, 2006) and presents the diaries of Aleksandr Benois (1870-1960) covering years 1918-1924. These diaries have never been published before. Aleksandr Benois was the famous painter, respected critic and art historian, artist and director at the Mariinsky, the Alexandrinsky and the Bolshoi Drama Theater, as well as book illustrator and the head of the Art Gallery of the Hermitage. He called his detailed daily records a "protocol of the current insanity in the atmosphere of fumes, lies and nonsense".
