The author, Edwin Geist (1902-1942), was a famous German composer of Jewish origin who immigrated to Lithuania in 1938 and got married to the Lithuanian pianist Lyda Bagrianskyte. After the Nazi invasion in Lithuania the couple was sent to Kaunas ghetto but soon Geist managed to escape. After he found himself free, he tried his best to free his wife. That's when he wrote his diaries published in this book. Their love story has a tragic end: Lyda was freed in 1942 but later that year Geist was arrested by gestapo and killed. A few months after his death his wife committed a suicide. This is the first publication of Geist's diaries that reflect not only his feelings for his wife, but also his thoughts and ideas on the events of those years.
